Debate Club consists
of several pairs of students who debate a topic as a
team at statewide tournaments. Each month, we work on a
new topic determined by the national debate group.
MMU sponsors a home tournament each year and
participates in tournaments around the state from
October through February, when we finish our season with
the state tournament in Montpelier.
A typical debate
consists of 3 rounds of debate lasting about one hour
each. It is also a progression of matches based on the
two-person team record; the winners are matched against
the other winning teams in order to determine first,
second and third places, as well as first, second and
third place speaker awards. The first award goes to the
strongest team based on the judges' ballots. The speaker
award goes to the individual with the most points in the
speaking category, also determined by the judges. We
meet one or two mornings each week to prepare for
the tournaments which typically are Friday afternoons or
Saturdays.
